Pune.
Oxford of the East. Education hub. Cultural capital of Maharashtra.
That's what the brochures say.
I read news pune today – the real news. The news from the traffic jams, the rising rents, the dying rivers.
Here are 4 cracks.
The Oxford of the East is breaking.
Crack 1: The Traffic That Will Steal 2 Hours of Your Life Every Day
Pune used to be peaceful. Slow. Green.
Now it's a parking lot. Cars. Bikes. Buses. Rickshaws. Everywhere.
The headline: "Traffic congestion worsens."
The truth: Worsens every year. No solution in sight.
What I saw: I sat in traffic on the Pune-Mumbai highway. 2 km took 45 minutes.
A commuter next to me said: "Main roz 2 ghante traffic mein baitha hoon. 2 ghante. Roz. 10 saal ho gaye."
Why this matters: 2 hours a day = 30 days a year. You spend one month of your life sitting in traffic.
What you should do: If you can, live near your office. If not, use the metro. It's slower than driving? No. It's faster.
Crack 2: The Rent That Will Eat Half Your Salary – If You Can Find a House
Pune's real estate is exploding. Rents have doubled in 5 years.
A 1BHK in a decent area costs ₹20,000 per month. A 2BHK costs ₹35,000.
The headline: "Real estate prices continue to rise."
The truth: Rise for buyers. Rise for renters. Rise for everyone except your salary.
What I saw: I met a young couple. Both are software engineers. Combined salary: ₹1.5 lakh per month. Rent: ₹40,000.
The wife said: "40,000 rent. 20,000 sona. 30,000 groceries. Bachta kuch nahi. Pune mein rehna mahanga ho gaya."
Why this matters: Because if half your salary goes to rent, you can't save. If you can't save, you can't retire.
What you should do: If you are moving to Pune for a job, negotiate your salary based on rent. Don't accept less.
Crack 3: The River That Is a Sewer – The Mula-Mutha Is Dying
Pune has two rivers. Mula and Mutha. They used to be clean. Now they are sewage drains.
The headline: "River cleaning project launched."
The truth: Launched 8 times. The rivers still stink.
What I saw: I stood on the Mutha riverbank. The water was black. Plastic everywhere. A dead dog floated by.
A local resident said: "Pehle yahan log nahate the. Ab koi paas nahi aata."
Why this matters: Because that river flows downstream. To your city? No. But the stench reaches your balcony.
What you should do: Don't throw garbage in rivers. Join a river cleaning drive.
Crack 4: The Young Man Who Refused to Leave – He Started a Library in a Bus
Young people are leaving Pune. Too expensive. Too crowded. Too stressful.
One young man refused. He bought an old bus. He filled it with books. He parks it in different slums every week.
The headline: "Bus library reaches 10,000 children."
The truth: He has 5,000 books now. All donated. He doesn't charge a rupee.
What I saw: I sat inside his bus. Children were reading. A little girl was reading a story about a princess. She was smiling.
He said: "Pune ne mujhe padhaya. Main padha raha hoon."
Why this matters: Because he is the city's hope.
What you should do: Donate books to him. Or start your own library.
Pune Is Breaking
Pune was the Oxford of the East.
Now the traffic steals your time.
Rent steals your salary.
Rivers steal your peace.
And one young man is stealing children from the streets – to give them books.
The Oxford of the East is breaking.
Are you still moving here?
