Every morning, we’re presented with a list of “current india news headlines.” They scream for attention. They demand emotion.
But not all news is equal. Some stories are truly important—they affect policy, the economy, people’s lives. Others are just noise—celebrity gossip, manufactured outrage, recycled controversies.
How do you tell the difference?
I use a simple filter: Will this matter in a month?
If the answer is yes, it’s news. If the answer is no, it’s noise.
Most headlines fail this test. A politician’s tweet? Noise. A stock market dip that recovers in a day? Noise. A film star’s divorce? Noise.
A new law that affects millions? News. A breakthrough in medicine? News. A change in education policy? News.
Spend your attention on the stories that will matter in a month. You’ll be informed without being exhausted.
I also ask a second filter: Does this affect me directly? Even if it’s important, if it doesn’t touch my life, I can read a summary rather than a deep dive. I prioritize local news, industry news, and issues I care about.
Try this for a week. Before you read a headline, ask: “Will this matter in a month?” If not, skip it. You’ll reclaim hours of time and feel less anxious.
