Gangadhar Meher University (GM University) in Sambalpur, Odisha, is gaining attention. But is it right for you?
I spoke with a current student, a third‑year BA student named Rohan. Here’s what he told me:
Strengths: - Affordable fees. Government‑funded, so it’s much cheaper than private colleges. - Decent faculty, especially in arts and humanities. The university is named after a famous Odia poet, so there’s a strong focus on literature, history, and culture. - Beautiful campus. Located in Sambalpur, it’s green and spacious. - Growing. The university is expanding its programs, including professional courses.
Weaknesses: - Placement opportunities are limited. Students often have to find jobs on their own. The university doesn’t have a strong placement cell for most courses. - Limited infrastructure in some departments. Not all labs and facilities are up to date. - Location. Sambalpur is not a major city, so opportunities for internships and networking are fewer than in Bhubaneswar or Delhi.
Best programs: - Arts, Commerce, and Sciences are well‑established. - Engineering and tech are newer and less developed. If you want a tech career, you might need to supplement with online courses.
If you’re from Odisha or nearby, and you’re looking for an affordable, reputable university, GM University is a solid choice. But if placements are your top priority, look elsewhere or plan to build your own network.
Rohan told me: “I chose GM because I wanted to study literature without taking a loan. I knew I’d have to find my own way after graduation. I’m doing internships, writing, building a portfolio. The university gives me time to do that.”
That’s the right mindset. No matter which college you choose, you’re responsible for your own career. Use college to build skills, make connections, and explore. Don’t rely on placements alone.
